Scouting Texas
Record: 3-2, 2-0 Big 12
Best player: LB Malik Jefferson looked the part of a future star as a freshman, before scuffling through last season. Now a junior, Jefferson is back to looking like one of the best defensive players in the conference. He has 43 tackles through five games and is a big reason the Longhorns’ defense has played much better after a season-opening loss.
The case for Texas: The season-opening loss to Maryland made it difficult for many to think of Texas as improved, but by winning three of their last four games and playing USC into overtime the Longhorns have shown that they aren’t going to be a pushover. Texas has improved defensively especially and has enough talent to take advantage of Oklahoma’s struggling secondary.
The case for Oklahoma: Texas’ strength—its defensive line—matches up with Oklahoma’s strength on its offensive line. The Sooners still have plenty of offensive weapons, and Baker Mayfield hasn’t thrown an interception in seven games, by far the longest streak of his career. It would figure that Oklahoma would put together a strong game soon after sleepwalking through the last month.
