Coach quiet on QB

- BY KELLY HINES

Tulsa has a quarterback controversy brewing. Golden Hurricane coach Philip Montgomery is not saying who will start Saturday against Houston — Chad President or Luke Skipper.

Following the firstquarter replacement of starter Chad President with backup Luke Skipper, who threw for 256 yards in the 62-28 loss at Tulane, Tulsa’s quarterback situation is murky heading into Saturday’s home game against Houston.

“We’ll just see how it all plays out,” coach Philip Montgomery said Tuesday. “… I thought (Skipper) came in and did some nice things. His play is just like everybody else’s — it’s got to be more consistent across the board.”

The Cougars also have used two quarterbacks, alternating Texas A&M transfer Kyle Allen and senior Kyle Postma. The latter started the last two games against Temple and SMU, totaling 402 yards.

“Postma brings some things to the table you’ve got to prepare for,” Montgomery said. “With his legs, he does a good job of extending plays. They’re using him in the run game. He’s still throwing the ball extremely effectively. He gives you some different variables that you have to account for.

“Kyle (Allen) can sit back in there and throw it wherever you want to throw it. From that standpoint, he’s not looking to run as much as the other. … Those two things you have to plan for and be able to execute depending on who’s in the game.”

Going up against Oliver

All-American defensive tackle Ed Oliver has battled an injury this season but remains a handful for opposing linemen. Oliver, a sophomore, has recorded 3.5 tackles for lost yardage, six quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles and a blocked kick in five games.

“He’s a player with a high motor, a sideline-to-sideline type of guy,” Hurricane right tackle Willie Wright said. “He’s definitely a guy that we have to game-plan to stop his run defense, pass rush and stuff like that. He’s an all-around good player.”

Looking back on last year

Defensive lineman Jesse Brubaker has one catch in his college career, a 1-yard grab late in the 2016 defeat at Houston that was inches from the goal line. A touchdown would have tied the game, but instead TU fell 38-31.

Asked about the play Tuesday, Brubaker said: “I bet I’d get in this time. I remember looking at the ref and not believing that he didn’t call a touchdown. Watching the film, it was close.”
