TAKING TEXAS

- JOHN HELSLEY, STAFF WRITER

Austin used to be a dreaded destination for OSU. From 1916 through 2009, the Cowboys were winless in 15 games played at Texas.

The script has flipped, however, with OSU winning an unprecedented — by anyone — four straight at Darrell K Royal — Texas Memorial Stadium. Inside the streak:

2010: OSU 33, Texas 16. The No. 12-ranked Cowboys ended six-plus decades of futility in Austin, emphatically, taking a 26-3 lead, then finishing the first win at Texas since 1944. Brandon Weeden passed for 409 yards and a score. Justin Blackmon had 145 yards receiving and a score. And Kendall Hunter ran for 116 and two TDs. “We were due,” said OSU coach Mike Gundy. “There was a lot of talk about not winning here ... and they’ve had our number for a while.”

2011: OSU 38, Texas 26. In an odd scheduling twist, the No. 6 Cowboys played in Austin back-to-back years. No problem. Jeremy Smith needed just seven carries to rush for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Joseph Randle added 68 yards and a rushing touchdown, and Weeden passed for 218 and a score. OSU picked off David Ash

twice and recovered a fumble, and Justin Gilbert returned a kickoff 100 yards for a score. 2013: OSU 38, Texas 13.Clint

Chelf threw for 197 yards and two touchdowns and added 95 yards and two more scores on the ground, as the No. 12 Cowboys never trailed and led the No. 23 Longhorns 38-13 entering the fourth quarter. It was the worst home loss for Mack Brown in 16 seasons as Texas coach. Gilbert led a solid OSU defensive effort, romping 43 yards with an interception for a touchdown.

2015: OSU 30, Texas 27. Once upon a time, it seemed like the Longhorns got all the breaks. But it was the Cowboys who benefited from good fortune here, gifted with a shot to win in the final seconds after Texas punter Michael Dickson botched a snap, turning the ball over at his own 18 with 36 seconds left. Ben Grogan booted his second field goal of the final 1:33, lifting the Cowboys. Mason Rudolph, a sophomore making his seventh career start at quarterback, committed three turnovers, two returned for touchdowns, and still OSU won.
