Scouting West Virginia

2017 record: 5-2 overall, 3-1 Big 12; coming off 38-36 win at Baylor.

Best player: It’s hard to argue against quarterback Will Grier, who ranks behind only OSU’s Mason Rudolph in the Big 12 in total offense and passing yards per game. Grier leads the league with 26 touchdown tosses, seven more than Rudolph and OU’s Baker Mayfield. Of those scoring throws, 15 have come in four Big 12 games. A Florida transfer, he may be the best quarterback Dana Holgorsen’s had in Morgantown.

The case for the Mountaineers: Morgantown is a rough place to play. Now the Mountaineers have a legit quarterback, and they catch a wounded OSU squad that struggled offensively against a Texas team that may have offered a blueprint for slowing the Cowboys. The case for the Cowboys: OSU hopes to be healthier by the time they arrive in Morgantown, especially on the offensive line, where many of their issues began in Austin. Armed with a supposed blueprint or not, the Mountaineers defense doesn’t appear to be all that. WVU sits eighth in the Big 12 in total defense and surrendered 36 points to Baylor, needing a stop of a two-point conversion and recovery of an onside kick to survive in Waco.
