Scouting Texas Tech

Record: 4-3, 1-3 Big 12

Best player: No surprise here, but the Red Raiders’ best player is their quarterback — this time Nic Shimonek. Shimonek is fourth in the Big 12 in total offense, behind only the two Bedlam quarterbacks and West Virginia’s Will Grier. The senior is averaging nearly 335 passing yards per game, though he was held to a season-low 207 passing yards and held without a touchdown through the air in Saturday’s loss to Iowa State.

The case for Texas Tech: The Red Raiders’ passing attack carved up Oklahoma’s secondary a year ago, as Tech threw for more than 700 yards. Shimonek isn’t quite the quarterback that Patrick Mahomes was last year, but the Sooners’ secondary problems remain, as evidenced by Kansas State’s late touchdown Saturday. Oklahoma’s last two opponents haven’t been able to take advantage of the Sooners’ secondary, but Tech could be a different story.

The case for Oklahoma: True, OU’s secondary has had its struggles but it has improved over the past two weeks even though the opposition hasn’t thrown much. The Red Raiders aren’t likely to slow down Oklahoma’s offense, especially with the recent emergence of Rodney Anderson in the backfield as well as Marquise Brown and Mykel Jones. But it’s Baker Mayfield that gives the Sooners a clear edge over the Tech defense. And with it being Mayfield’s final game against his old team, the Sooners’ offensive edge is much greater.
