The Oklahoman’s top 10 games of Week 9

- Jacob Unruh junruh@ oklahoman.com

Some district titles will be decided.

That’s the theme of Week 9 with several district titles on the line and playoff races tightening.

For The Oklahoman’s top 10 games of the week, the primary focus was the importance of the game. Several games around the state have huge playoff implications, including around the Oklahoma City area.

Here is a look at the games:

1. Class 6A-I No. 3 Jenks (4-4) at 6A-I No. 5 Westmoore (7-1)

Westmoore has rebounded in a big way from its loss to Broken Arrow, and Jenks has found its rhythm with four straight wins. If Jenks wins, it’s the district champion. No West team has beaten Jenks since Westmoore did so in the 2002 state quarterfinals. Can the Jaguars do it again?

2. Class 6A-II No. 1 Tulsa Washington (7-1) at 6A-II No. 6 Bixby (5-3)

The District 6A-II-2 title is on the line between two of the classes’ top programs. Bixby, the three-time defending champion, has won four straight games and needs a fifth to avoid a mustwin situation in Week 10 to host a playoff game.

3. Class A No. 4 Minco (7-1) at A No. 5 Oklahoma Christian Academy (8-0)

OCA features one of the most dynamic offenses in the class with 48.5 points per game. Minco has allowed just 5.8 points per game with five shutouts. That only makes the matchup for the District A-4 title more interesting.

4. Class 5A No. 9 Lawton MacArthur (5-3) at 5A No. 4 Altus (7-1)

Lawton MacArthur’s gauntlet to close the season starts with Altus and ends with Ardmore. If the Highlanders win out, they come away with the district title. Should Altus and Ardmore both win Friday, that clinches the district title for Ardmore.

5. Class 4A Ada (5-3) at 4A No. 4 Blanchard (8-0)

The District 4A-2 title will go to Blanchard with a win, but a loss could lead to a three-way tie. Talk about drama between two tradition-rich programs.

6. Class 3A No. 4 Beggs (7-1) at 3A No. 8 Bristow (7-1)

Another top-10 matchup that decides a district title. This time, it features two teams that on paper appear to be evenly matched. Both have dominated District 3A-6.

7. Class 3A No. 10 Sperry (7-1) at 3A No. 2 Berryhill (8-0)

The District 3A-5 title is on the line in a matchup that features two teams that score more than 40 points per game. Berryhill’s defense, though, could be a difference. It has allowed just shy of nine points per game.

8. Class 3A No. 9 Sequoyah Tahlequah (7-1) at 3A Jay (8-1)

Jay has been a big surprise this season, with its lone loss coming out of state. But the Bulldogs will really be tested by Sequoyah Tahlequah with the District 3A-7 title on the line.

9. Class 6A-II No. 5 Putnam City (6-2) at 6A-II No. 4 Stillwater (7-1)

This game won’t decide a district title, but it features two talented teams in a tight playoff race. The winner likely gets the advantage of avoiding a playoff road opener at the winner of Tulsa Washington and Bixby.

10. Class 6A-I No. 8 Edmond Santa Fe (4-4) at 6A-I No. 7 Yukon (4-4)

District title hopes are gone for both teams, but this game is still pivotal. It’s likely the winner extends its season, while the loser heads home after Week 10.

Note: All games Friday.
