A Sunday trip to Tulsa provided two significant opportunities for Oklahoma State’s basketball program.

An open practice allowing area Cowboys fans a peek at the team.

Open arms to a Sutton — Scott Sutton — who’s coming back to OSU as an assistant coach on Mike Boynton’s staff.

Boynton announced Sutton’s hiring Sunday, in advance of his team’s open workout at Tulsa Memorial High School. The youngest son of Cowboys legend Eddie Sutton, Scott spent the past 18 years as the head coach at Oral Roberts University.

“I’m thrilled to have a man of Scott Sutton’s pedigree joining our coaching staff,” Boynton said. “The Sutton name certainly means a great deal to our program and the Oklahoma State family, but it’s just as respected nationally.

“Scott’s name is all over the program’s record books from his playing days, and he’s proved himself in the coaching arena as well. I’m excited to welcome Scott and his family back to Stillwater to help us continue this program’s march to excellence.”

For Scott Sutton, it’s a welcome return to coaching — and Stillwater — where he’ll now work upon Eddie Sutton Court.

“I’m beyond excited to join Coach Boynton’s coaching staff at Oklahoma State,” Scott said. “OSU is a special place for my family, and we are thrilled to come home to Stillwater. I look forward to helping Coach Boynton and the Cowboys continue to have great success.”

Sutton fills a spot vacated created with the firing of embattled former

assistant Lamont Evans and gives Boynton another former head coach on his staff, along John Cooper, who came to the Cowboys after coaching Miami (Ohio).

Scott, who played two seasons for his dad at OSU, went 328-247 at ORU and finished as the school’s all-time wins leader before his firing earlier this year. A threetime Summit League Coach of the Year, Sutton produced four Associated Press All-Americans and four conference players of the year at ORU.

His Golden Eagles teams finished either first or second in the conference standings nine times

and became known for upsets over major conference squads, including Arkansas, Georgetown, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Stanford, Seton Hall, USC and OSU among them.

The biggest win came in November 2006, when Sutton-led ORU won 78-71 at No. 3 Kansas, coached by Bill Self, who hired Sutton as an assistant at ORU in 1995.

Sunday’s announcement puts both Sutton coaching sons back in the college basketball business. Scott’s brother Sean, who also played at OSU and coached the Cowboys later, was recently added to the staff

at Texas Tech.

Together, the Sutton trio — Eddie, Sean and Scott — are the most successful father-son combination in NCAA history with 1,171 total victories.

Scott played for the Cowboys and his father from 1992-94. He saw action in 63 career games and is arguably the most efficient guard in program history. Sutton still holds the single season and career records for assist-to-turnover ratio thanks to a senior season that featured 119 assists and just 21 turnovers (5.67 a/to). For his career, Sutton had 181 assists to just 49 giveaways for a ratio of 3.69.
