Sooners’ defense reminded of last year’s Texas Tech game

- Ryan Aber raber@ oklahoman.com

At the bottom of the tip sheet given to all of Oklahoma’s defensive backs this week is a simple formula — ”88=734.”

“We all know what that means,” senior cornerback

Jordan Thomas said this week as the Sooners prepare to face Texas Tech. “It’s a constant reminder that, ‘Hey, this is what happened last year; we need to make sure that doesn’t happen again this year.’”

A year ago in OU’s wild 66-59 win in Lubbock, the Red Raiders attempted 88 passes and Patrick

Mahomes threw for 734 yards and five touchdowns.

“We got a lot to prove,” Thomas said. “They had something like 800-something yards of offense and, just seeing that on paper, that’s not real. That’s a video game. But that was real life. Obviously, that’s something that’s left a bad taste in my mouth for the longest time, but we had to put that on hold because that wasn’t important at the beginning of the season.”

But now, the Sooners get their chance to make up for the 854 yards of total offense Tech posted — the exact same number of yards the Sooners had in that game as well.

Jones still dealing with shoulder injury

Wide receiver Mykel

Jones isn’t sure yet if he’ll require offseason shoulder surgery after his left shoulder popped out of place “three or four times” during last weekend’s game at Kansas State, but Jones expects to have to deal with the injury for the rest of this year at least.

“I’ll kind of manage it throughout the week and just get ready every Saturday,” Jones said. “If that’s something that I have to look forward to, it is what it is. I’ll be ready.”

Jones that the pain was intense the first time it happened, but the subsequent dislocations didn’t hurt nearly as bad.

Anderson not worrying about sixth year of eligibility

Redshirt sophomore running back Rodney Anderson appears to be a strong candidate to be granted a sixth year of eligibility after his freshman season ended with a broken leg suffered in the second game and a neck injury ended his next season before it even began.

But Anderson isn’t too worried about that right now.

“I’m going one day at a time, one foot in front of the other until the next decision comes,” Anderson said.

More often than not, waivers aren’t requested or granted until it gets closer to the end of an athlete’s eligibility.

Last season, it was somewhat of a surprise when center Erick Wren had his waiver request granted during the middle of what had been his senior season.
