OKC Symphonic Band plans Veterans Day concert
The Oklahoma City Symphonic Band has announced its upcoming “Celebrating Heroes!” Veterans Day Concert to honor American veterans.
Performance selections will include “Hymn to the Fallen” by John Williams, “Armenian Dances” by Alfred Reed and “Theme from Schindler’s List,” featuring violin soloist Sophia Ro.
The concert also will feature classic marches, including “Armed Forces Salute” and a special recognition of all veterans.
The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at Oklahoma City University in the Margaret E. Petree Recital Hall, Kirkpatrick Fine Arts Center, 2501 N Blackwelder.
Admission will be free, however donations will be accepted.
The Oklahoma City Symphonic Band is composed of about a hundred professional and amateur musicians from across the metro area. The band is under the direction of Mark G. Belcik, associate dean of music at Oklahoma City University.

EDMOND — The Edmond Animal Welfare Shelter will have an adoption event and fundraiser from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday. The day will include games such as ring toss, beanbag toss and can knockdown, as well as face painting, paper-plate painting, a fun “spooky” trail, and a costume contest, which will begin at 2:30 p.m. for both kids and pets.
Items available for sale will include baked goods, raffle items, pet baskets, hamburgers and hot dogs. Photos also will be available for a donation. Funds raised will benefit the shelter’s nonprofit partner, Paws for Life Inc., a local nonprofit organization that helps cover the costs of unique medical needs for animals in the shelter. Animals will be available for adoption throughout Saturday’s event at the shelter, 2424 Old Timbers Drive. For more information, call 216-7615.
