Playoffs kick-off Friday night

-

The high school playoffs start Friday night and it is the 34th consecutive season that the Davis Wolves will be participating, a state record.

The advancement to week 11 and the first round of the high school football playoffs is something the town of Davis has gotten used to.

As Davis prepares to host Hobart this Friday, the football program has reached a record mark of making the playoffs for 34 consecutive years, breaking the previous record streak of 33, set by Thomas in 1955-87.

In that stretch, Davis has won five state championships, including the most recent one in 2014.

Coach Jody Weber, who played for Davis in the early years of the streak from 1985 to 1987, said even though the focus this week has been all about Hobart, they took time to acknowledge the accomplishment.

“Of all the things outside of winning a state title, I am actually kind of proud of this,” Weber told the Tulsa World. “It says something about our community and our football community."

Stone excited for Dibble seniors

Dibble coach Chad Stone's first impression of Colton Harwick was a dismissive one.

Harwick, all of 5-foot-8 and 160 pounds, was definitely too small to survive in a run heavy offense ... right?

"I couldn't have been more off," Stone says now. "Nobody works harder and gives more to his team than Colton. In all my years coaching, he's the toughest kid I've ever met."

High praise, but Harwick has earned it. This season the diminutive senior has rushed for nearly 1,500 yards and 26 total touchdowns while helping lead Dibble to a 7-3 record and a date with Kingston in the first round of the playoffs this Friday.

Harwick passed 3,000 rushing yards for his career earlier this season, while also leading the Demons in receiving yards and racking up 62 tackles.

Stone said not just Harwick but all 14 of his seniors have really helped turn the program around, pushing the Demons to the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

"I'm just so happy for all our seniors to get to the playoffs," Stone said. "They have worked so hard and given it everything they've had to get here."

Winter media day set for Wednesday

The Oklahoman's annual Winter Sports Media Day is set for Wednesday at Bishop McGuinness High School.

The event will be held in the lobby of the gymnasium, beginning at 3:30 p.m. and ending at 7:30. The school is located at 801 NW 50 Street in Oklahoma City. Visitors are asked to enter from the Interstate 44 service road off Western Avenue.

Each Oklahoma City-area high school participating in basketball, swimming and wrestling is encouraged to bring athletes to meet The Oklahoman's high school coverage team for interviews, videos and photos that will be used throughout the upcoming season.
