Mattingly to return as Marlins manager
Miami Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill confirmed Thursday that Don Mattingly will return for the third season of his four-year contract as manager. Hill was less illuminating regarding the status of Giancarlo Stanton. The All-Star right fielder led the major leagues with 59 homers and 132 RBIs, but his salary will rise to $25 million in 2018, which probably makes him too pricey for the revenue-starved Marlins to keep. Second baseman Dee Gordon, whose salary climbs to $10.8 million next year, is also likely to be shopped.
Yankees bench coach Thomson first to interview for manager
Longtime Yankees coach Rob Thomson emphasized his ability to speak with players as he became the first person to audition for the New York manager job that opened when Joe Girardi was fired last month.
The 54-year-old Canadian has been with the Yankees for 28 seasons. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman cited "connectivity" with players as the reason to part with Girardi.
"I really don't want to compare myself to Joe. I love Joe," Thomson said during a media session Thursday, a day after his five-to-six-hour interview. "But I do know this. My strengths are my communication and my trust with the players."
Bucks' Kidd fined for criticism of officiating
Milwaukee Bucks coach Jason Kidd was fined $15,000 by the NBA on Thursday for public criticism of the officiating in a loss at Cleveland.
Kidd made the comments after the 124-119 loss Tuesday night. Milwaukee was called for 31 personal fouls to 18 for Cleveland, and the Cavs attempted 38 free throws.
Kidd pointed out that over the past three games, opponents have tried 95 free throws to 40 for Milwaukee.
