Battle-tested Bombers cruise past Sand Springs

MIDWEST CITY — Despite earning a district title, Midwest City‘s final two regular season opponents made games difficult as they applied pressured and kept the games close.

Battle-tested from these opponents, Midwest City quickly made Friday’s opening playoff seem like a walk in the park.

Midwest City scored touchdowns on its first five possessions and held Sand Springs scoreless in the first half as it comfortably won its Class 6A-II quarterfinal 47-12.

The game was a playoff rematch from Sand Springs’ upset victory last season. But Friday’s outcome was never in question as Midwest City was efficient, averaging 12 yards a play on offense in the first half.

Preston Colbert, Midwest City’s quarterback, threw four touchdowns. Juwan Walker caught three of Colbert’s touchdowns, all in the second quarter, and finished the game with seven catches for 148 yards.

”Our quarterback is really efficient, and our offensive line is getting him plenty of time,” Midwest City coach Darrell Hall said. “We did what we expected to do in the first half. We’ve been efficient all year and have put points on the board, so that’s a big relief.”

In Week 9, Midwest City struggled to put away Enid until late as its opponent had 25 first downs and 366 yards of total offense. The following week Midwest City played Stillwater in what was a one-possession game until late in the fourth quarter.

But Hall noted that his team had already played five of the other seven teams in the playoff bracket. The confidence was evident as the Midwest City defense sacked Sand Springs’ quarterback on five of the first seven times he dropped back to pass.

Our guys take this seriously, and we had a good week of practice” Hall said. “It’s been clicking well, and I have a mature team. Our guys know what is at stake.”

Sand Springs made its first red-zone trip on its final drive of the first half, but Midwest City defensive back Tramon Jackson made an interception in the end zone.

Jackson also added a 39-yard interception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
