Sooners take on SMU

Sherri Coale’s No. 21-ranked Oklahoma Sooners defeated the SMU Mustangs 87-75 Friday night.

NORMAN — Oklahoma held off SMU down the stretch as the No. 21-ranked Sooners downed the Mustangs, 87-75, Friday night at Lloyd Noble Center to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Gabbi Ortiz led four Sooners in double-figures with 20 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Maddie Manning had 18, Vionise Pierre-Louis 14 and Ana Llanusa 12 to round out OU's balanced attack. Mandy Simpson added five points and a team-high eight rebounds against SMU.

The Sooners notched nine 3-pointers in the first half, just one shy of the school record for made threes in a half. Ortiz had four of the nine and finished with five on the night.

The Sooners were up 62-47 with less than four minutes to play in the third quarter, but SMU went on a 9-0 run in the fourth period to cut the Sooners' lead to 67-64 with 6:41 left in the game.

The Mustangs never got closer and Llanusa's fourth three-pointer of the game with 58 seconds remaining put the Sooners back up by 10 and sealed the win.

McKenzie Adams led the Mustangs with 25 points on 8-of-27 shooting, while Kiara Perry and Ariana Whitfield each added 13.

The Sooners will travel to Fort Collins, Colorado, to take on Colorado State on Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
