Eason sparks furious John Marshall rally

Trey Eason saw John Marshall star running back Devonte Lee crying on the sideline. He could sense a helpless feeling grab hold of the seasonably warm air at Taft Stadium.

For Eason, this is the opportunity he had waited 12 weeks for after transferring from Anadarko.

With Lee nursing a hamstring injury that kept him out for the second half, Eason ran wild in Friday’s 3A second round playoff game, rushing for 169 yards and four touchdowns to help John Marshall upend Kingfisher, 51-35.

“It was just the most meaningful game to me, to be honest,” Eason said. “I’ve been wanting to prove to my coaches and my team that I could be a bigger part of the team.”

Eason had just two carries in the first half before toting it 18 times for 159 yards and the four scores.

His third touchdown of the night came early in the fourth quarter amid a flurry of 30 unanswered points for the Bears.

Lee, who said he’ll play in next week’s quarterfinals at Idabel, was the first to greet Eason.

“To see him come out here and do what he’s supposed to do and go score and put us up, I can’t be more happier than that,” said Lee, who rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown before the injury.

The second half was a series of wild momentum shifts. Down 19-7 at the break, John Marshall scored 14 unanswered, followed by 16 straight from Kingfisher before the Bears erupted for the final 30 points.

Kingfisher’s Cole Daugherty accounted for three scores, including a pair of touchdowns on wide receiver double passes to Trey Green, who finished with 226 receiving yards.
