Tipton sets playoff record for most points in game

- ADAM KEMP, STAFF WRITER

It started to dawn on Tipton coach Travis White at halftime.

“We are going to score 100 points,” he said he remembered thinking as Tipton went into the locker room up 62-34 against Tulsa’s Regent Prep.

“And we are going to need to score 100 points.”

Thanks to more than 700 yards rushing by Tipton, the Tigers did eventually surpass the century mark and the game was called at 106-58 after Tipton went up more than 45 points.

The 106 points is the most ever in an Oklahoma high school football playoff game, and the win helps Tipton advance to the Class C semifinals.

While it is the most points in playoff history, it's not the highest scoring game this year. Oklahoma School for the Deaf beat Missouri Deaf 124-102 on Oct. 26

White swears every point was necessary as Tipton didn’t feel comfortable with any point total against a potent Regent Prep passing attack that finished with nearly 500 yards.

Tipton scored the final touchdown with about 7 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter after more than 3½ hours and 215 combined plays.

“It’s neat,” White said. “I think we’ll be in the history books for probably a long time.”

Rick Wilson improving following stroke

Longtime basketball coach Rick Wilson has shown improvement since he suffered a stroke during a game last week, according to an update from a family member.

Wilson has been moved from intensive care to a private room and is hoping to be released in a few days, according to an email to The Oklahoman.

Wilson was coaching the Duke girls basketball team last week in Indiahoma when he suffered a stroke. His improvement since was labeled a “true miracle,” according to the family. But he faces “a difficult road to travel with being able to walk, speak clearly and see.”

Wilson led Duke to the Class B state tournament in March. He's coached a team from each classification in the state tournament.

He won state titles with Carl Albert (5A), Weatherford (4A), Elk City (3A), Seiling (2A) and Hydro-Eakly (2A). He also led Sand Springs (6A), Elgin (4A) and Sterling (A) to the tournament.
