Gundy: K-State offense gave OSU ‘our own medicine’

- SCOTT WRIGHT, STAFF WRITER

As he reviewed his team’s 45-40 loss to Kansas State from Saturday, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy noticed something familiar in the K-State offense.

Not in the style of play, of course. But in the method of the Wildcats’ success.

“We had seven threeand-outs on defense,” Gundy said. “That’s pretty good. But we gave up four huge plays.

“So they used the formula that we’ve used for years around here. You get us three-and-out a few times, but we’re eventually gonna get you on a big play. We got a little bit of our own medicine.”

Ultimately, Gundy pointed to the turnover battle, which K-State won 2-1, and the kickoff return touchdown by Byron Pringle as the difference in the game for Kansas State.

Quarterback commit Spencer Sanders gets USA Football invite

Oklahoma State quarterback commitment Spencer Sanders posted news on Twitter Monday of his invitation to participate with the USA Football under-19 national team.

The US team will take on the Canadian national team in the International Bowl on Jan. 19 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound senior at Denton, Texas, Ryan High School has thrown for 2,748 yards and 37 touchdowns with just four interceptions in 11 games. He has also rushed for 889 yards on 104 carries with 11 touchdowns and five 100-yard games.

Darrion Daniels’ injury will be evaluated mid-week

Oklahoma State’s Darrion Daniels missed last week’s game against Kansas State with an arm injury, and his availability remains in question for Saturday’s regular-season finale against Kansas.

The 6-3, 300-pound junior defensive tackle had his right arm in a sling last Saturday. Gundy said his status will be evaluated Tuesday or Wednesday.

Without Daniels, DeQuinton Osborne was joined in the starting lineup by Trey Carter, with Enoch Smith Jr. and Taaj Bakari rotating in.

Rudolph, Washington finalists for major awards

Gundy offered some strong words to describe quarterback Mason Rudolph’s career success in a Cowboy uniform.

“He’ll leave here as the most decorated player since Barry Sanders,” Gundy said.

On Monday, Rudolph was named one of three finalists for the Davey O’Brien Award for the nation’s top quarterback. His No. 1 receiver, James Washington, landed on the finalist list for the Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation’s outstanding receiver.

Rudolph is the nation’s leading passer both in yards (4,115) and yards per game (374.1). He ranks among the top five in the nation in passing touchdowns, total offense, pass efficiency, passing yards per attempt and passing yards per completion this season.

Rudolph is Oklahoma State’s first-ever finalist for the Davey O’Brien Award. He joins Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield and Ohio State’s J.T. Barrett on the list of finalists.

Washington is joined by West Virginia’s David Sills and Colorado State’s Michael Gallup on the Biletnikoff list.

Washington is averaging 118.8 receiving yards per game. With a strong finish to the season, he could finish as the Big 12 career receiving yards leader. He enters this week’s game 346 yards shy of the Big 12 record with two games to play.

Both awards will be given out at The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec. 7.

Fans can vote for Rudolph once daily per registered email address at VoteOBrien.org. Fan voting counts as five percent of the balloting when combined with the results from the Davey O’Brien national selection committee.
