PC North takes pride in target

Putnam City North basketball coach Ryan Wagner say his team is still learning to play with a bullseye.

As basketball season prepares to tip off next week for Putnam City North, Wagner said he's been excited by how his team has looked in preseason. He also knows they are ready to play some games that count.

"We are definitely off on Thanksgiving from practice," Wagner said. "But they barely even want days off anymore. That's how you know you have a team of competitors. They want to be in the gym."

Led by a senior group of Adokiye Iyaye, Chris Braggs, Blake Owens and junior guard Micah Thomas, the Panthers are looking to improve on a semifinals appearance last year.

This week, they found out they were voted the No. 1 team in the first rankings released by the OSSAA.

Wagner, who's coming into his fourth year at North, said his team takes pride in the early-season ranking and hopes to live up to expectations.

"From where we were when we started three years ago to now, it's a huge difference," Wagner said. "We have the hardest working kids around and they are ready to come out and show what they have."

Roberts off to good start in college

Oklahoma’s all-time 5-on-5 scoring leader is up to her old tricks at the collegiate level.

Former Classen SAS star Taylor Roberts was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday after leading Tennessee State in scoring her first two games.

Roberts, a freshman, had 18 points and nine rebounds against Alabama A&M, scoring 14 points in the second half to erase a 23-point deficit.

Through two games, she’s averaged 15.5 points and seven rebounds. She’s also fifth in the conference for scoring.

Roberts scored a staterecord 3,429 career points for Classen SAS. Last season, she was on The Oklahoman’s Super 5.
