- Coach Lincoln Riley announced that Mayfield will play against West Virginia on Saturday but will not start.

The next step

The pay cut for legislators is certainly a good start but only part of the problem. Next and urgent, how to get state agency heads to trim their vast pyramids and truly improve their processes and outcomes with dispatch?

Class matters

I was a starting quarterback in 1969 on the OU freshman football team. My QB coach was Bobby Warmack and I went headto-head with Jack Mildren in the spring of 1970. He won but I still played. Both Warmack and Mildren showed and taught me more about character and putting the team first than Baker Mayfield would ever understand. They had class. Mayfield can’t spell the word class. Everyone says he plays “with a chip on his shoulder.” Guess what? Every Division 1 player has an edge and a chip from grade school to the pros. That’s how they get there. To put the face of OU football today on a person who does vile acts on national TV is wrong. If I were the head coach, Mayfield wouldn’t even be on the team. How many times will other school recruiters play that disgusting sideline film of Mayfield to OU’s future recruits? He’s not worth the reputation of OU football or the university.

Warts and all

Baker Mayfield was duped by Kansas, with the hands behind their back ploy and the coaching of two small children to snub OU in front of TV land. Kansas had no chance to beat OU on the field so they turned to underhanded unsportsmanlike conduct to get some type of revenge. Targeting our quarterback, lying on him after the play was whistled dead, late hits, heckling from the fans, etc., for three hours. How much of that could we put up with before some type of reprisal?

I don’t blame Baker for losing his temper in a low-class atmosphere such as that. If Coach Riley holds Baker out of the last game, it will kill his chances for the Heisman Trophy and maybe our chances to compete for a national championship. Is this what the people of Oklahoma want to do to show our appreciation for this quarterback who has been kicked in the teeth by so many programs?

When you marry someone, you accept them warts and all. When this kid jumps into the stands and thanks the fans or takes a selfie with someone on their phone or takes the OU program to the top of college football, we do not treat them like this — we appreciate them.
