OU-WEST VIRGINIA: THREE STORYLINES

- RYAN ABER, STAFF WRITER

Mayfield’s last ride

When Baker Mayfield trots onto the field, almost certainly during the first half, he figures to get a massive ovation from the OU crowd in his final home game.

Mayfield’s journey from Lake Travis High School in the Austin area to Texas Tech to Oklahoma has been one of college football’s most incredible stories not only in recent years but ever.

He grew up dreaming of playing at OU and will finish his career as perhaps the best quarterback in Sooners history.

Tested on the corners

While Oklahoma’s cornerbacks — Parnell Motley, Tre Norwood and Tre Brown — have performed well over the past two games, they haven’t been tested in that span quite like they’ll be stressed by the Mountaineers.

Though West Virginia will start its backup quarterback after Will Grier’s injury last week, its receiving corps will still test the Sooners.

If Norwood and Motley in particular perform well, that’d be a very positive sign for OU’s defense.

It’s also worth watching whether or not Jordan Thomas is able to return. Thomas hasn’t played since injuring his

Murray watch

Kyler Murray might not play much at the start of the game with Mayfield sitting, but it’ll still be a big moment for him.

One of the most decorated signal callers in Texas high school football history has played in five games this season, but other than a couple gimmick situations, his playing time has come at the end of blowout wins.

Murray is expected to compete with Austin Kendall for the starting job next season, and this gives Murray an opportunity to take a step forward in that pursuit, however long he’s used.
