Lamb’s big block springs Anderson for touchdown
of receiver to be a onedimensional receiver. I just feel like blocking is just as important as catching the ball. If you don’t block for your teammates, then you’re not being a team player. I would like to be a team player and I’d like to have that label. I’m just here to help win games.”
Sooners struggle with wildcat
OU knew the Mountaineers’ offense would be a little different without starting quarterback Will Grier.
But the Sooners didn’t bet on WVU running the wildcat nearly 30 times Saturday night.
On the second play of the game, backup quarterback Chris Chugonov slipped out wide just moments before the snap, leaving running back Kennedy McKoy under center.
McKoy sliced right up the middle for an eightyard gain.
The Mountaineers ran the wildcat three times in their first drive and picked up 21 yards. WVU went back to the play frequently throughout the afternoon, and it helped the Mountaineers gain 250 yards on the ground.
“We really weren’t expecting them to run wildcat 30 or so times,” defensive coordinator Mike Stoops said. “But they did what they had to do to move the ball, and I thought they did a good job in their wildcat package, creating some running lanes and some similar stuff that Kansas State did three or four weeks ago to get some seams.
“So, I wasn’t thrilled about our run defense, but (they) caught us a little bit off guard. We tried to make some adjustments. We contained it a little bit and tried to get ‘em behind schedule, but just overall just need to be better in our run defense.”
Murray catches up with Spavital
During warm-ups on Saturday, OU quarterback Kyler Murray shared a quick hug with West Virginia offensive coordinator Jake Spavital.
The pair were at Texas A&M together for a year when Spavital was the Aggies' offensive coordinator and Murray was a freshman quarterback.
“I still keep in touch with Spav,” Murray said. “He’s a guy I love to death. He recruited me in high school, just three or four years ago.
“This is the first time I’ve seen him since I left. It was good to see him. It brought back a lot of memories.”
