Calumet’s Island surpasses 2,000 career points

-

Calumet coach Jacob Mayfield says his team enjoys watching Riley Island score a little too much.

“Sometimes they’ll get hit in the face with a pass because they are just watching,” Mayfield said. “That’s something we gotta get better at, not just watching Riley score.”

Island, a senior at Class B Calumet, surpassed 2,000 career points this past weekend after a flurry of huge games in the Canton Basketball Tournament.

In three games, Island scored 118 points, including 46 against Cimarron and 51 against Fairview to help lead Calumet to the tournament title with an 82-63 win.

Island starred in the state tournament last year, helping Calumet win the title with a 40-point effort in the championship game.

A minor injury saw Island get off to a slow start this season, but Mayfield said it appears everything is back to normal.

“He scores every way imaginable,” Mayfield said. “You are never out of a game when you’ve got him on the floor.”
