Hamels donate mansion

Texas Rangers pitcher Cole Hamels and his wife, Heidi, are donating a mansion and 100 acres of land in southwest Missouri to charity that provides camps for children with special needs and chronic illnesses and their siblings.

The 32,000-square foot home will be donated to Camp Barnabas.

The mansion and land is near Table Rock Lake near Reeds Springs. Heidi Hamels grew up in Buffalo, Missouri.

The Springfield News-Leader reports an attorney for the couple said they thought the mansion would be their dream home. But when Hamels was traded to the Rangers, they moved to Texas and never moved into the Missouri house.

Moreland to remain with Red Sox

First baseman Mitch Moreland has agreed to a $13 million, two-year contract to return to the Boston Red Sox and play for former teammate Alex Cora.

“He’s a great baseball guy,” said Moreland, who was on the Texas Rangers when Cora made a brief appearance there in 2010. “He was a great teammate then, and I don’t expect anything different from him as a manager.”

Moreland, 32, spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Rangers. The 32-year-old left-handed batter hit .246 with 22 homers 79 RBIs in his first season with the team last year. His home run total was just behind Mookie Betts (24) and Hanley Ramirez (23) on the Red Sox, who hit an AL-low 168 for the season.

Student offered plea deal

A former Connecticut college student accused of lying about being raped by two university football players has been offered a plea deal.

A judge on Monday set a Jan. 10 date for Nikki Yovino to accept or reject the offer.

Defense attorney Ryan O’Neill says the deal’s details will remain confidential until then.

The 19-year-old New York native accused two Sacred Heart football players of sexually assaulting her during an October 2016 party. The players said the sex was consensual.

Police say Yovino later admitted making up the allegations because she was worried another student would lose romantic interest in her when he found out about the sexual encounter.

A judge last month denied Yovino access to a probation program that would have led to a dismissal of the charges.
