The Oklahoman

Winter is coming

-

The Oklahoma State Department of Health encourages residents to start preparing for colder weather now with the following tips:

•Babies should sleep in a warm room and wear warm clothes, like footed pajamas. Don’t use blankets, which could cause a baby to suffocate. At the same time, watch for sweating and other signs of overheating, because babies have more trouble than adults maintaining a consistent body temperature.

•Older adults are particularly vulnerable to cold because they produce less body heat than younger people. Help older people who are at risk get to a warm place.

•If you plan to use a space heater or burn wood, install a carbon monoxide detector and make sure you have proper ventilation. Have your chimney cleaned and inspected, and never use a generator, grill or camp stove inside or in a garage.

•Dress in layers, and wear water-resistant clothing if possible.

•Come up with a plan in case you lose utility service during a storm. Follow the National Weather Service for information about storm watches and warnings.

•Check the tread on your tires and keep your gas tank full. Carry extra clothing, blankets and snacks like trail mix or protein bars in case your car stalls.

•Bring pets indoors.
