Statistical adjustment gives Trae Young double-double

- RYAN ABER, STAFF WRITER

With just more than two minutes remaining in Tuesday’s 75-65 win over Texas Tech, Oklahoma freshman point guard Trae Young drove toward the basket from above the 3-point line, flinging the ball across his body around the free-throw line to teammate Christian James beyond the arc.

James pumped, and when no defender came running his way, buried a 3-point shot that put the Sooners up 13 with 2:01 to play.

Initially, Young was not credited with an assist on the play but after review of the play Wednesday, Young was credited with his 10th assist, giving him his ninth double-double of the season.

Young finished with 27 points and 10 assists in the win. The statistical change also put Young ahead of Jordan Woodard on OU’s all-time freshman assists chart, with 153. Young is one behind Tommy MasonGriffin for the OU freshman record of 154.

Young is also more than halfway to the NCAA record for freshman assists. Duke’s Bobby Hurley had 288 in 1990.

The Big 12 record is held by Texas’ T.J. Ford, who had 273 in 2002.
