The Oklahoman

Easy for them to say

-

Regarding “Oklahoma leaders offer revenue, reform package,” (News, Jan. 12): A large group of millionaires and billionaires calling themselves Step Up Oklahoma has taken it upon themselves to help Oklahoma through our self-made financial crises. Noted: There was not one “everyday Joe or Jane” in that group, yet we are the ones who will most be affected. How easy is it for millionaires and billionaires to want taxes raised and to limit some of the deductions and “loopholes” currently in the Oklahoma tax code? I think I pay way too much in Oklahoma taxes for the small amount of taxable money on my forms. I am “rich” according to the state and my retirement money is taxed at the top rate, which kicks in at a very low amount. Taxing gasoline more at the pump will definitely hurt a large part of our population.

The people spoke some years ago requiring legislators to have a 75 percent supermajority to raise taxes.

Now the Step Up group wants that reduced to 60 percent. And they want to raise term limits, which also were voted in by the citizens of Oklahoma for good reasons.

I didn’t see anything on their wish list about school consolidation. But let’s give teachers a (much needed) $5,000 raise while ignoring all other state employees who have not had raises in over a decade.

Where is my protest sign?
