Asmall town plans to celebrate comics and superheroes in a big way this weekend. Saturday marks thesecond annual Pryor Creek Comic Convention, taking place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at 6 N Adair St. in Pryor. About 1,000 attended last year’s inaugural show, according to a news release.

Organizer Jimmie Tramel said the community and surrounding areas supported the show in a big way last year.

“Willa smaller town support a comic convention? We got the answer last year, and we were pleasantly surprised when we had a great turnout at the inaugural show,” Tramel said.

“We decided immediately that it was worth doing again. Judging by reaction on social media— the Pryor Creek Comic Convention Facebook pagehas more than 670 likes— we’re expecting a full house again.”

Author and artist guests include Jack and Carole Bender, John Wooley, R.A. Jones, Michael Vance, Rob Soul, Gene DeRosa, Bradley H. Sinor, Sue Sinor, creators from Equinox Comics and painter/former TV sports anchor Jack Bunds.

The latest project from Jones to get a new release is the Western graphic novel “Savage,” by Jones and artist Ted Slampyak.

“It’s set in the time and place of the old West, but instead of bank robbers or outlaws ... our main character, whose name is Savage, faces werewolves and vampires and ghouls and the like. It’s a Western with a horror slant.”

Cosplay also will be featured at the show. Owasso cosplayer Courtney Allen will be a featured cosplayer at the convention.

The show will hosta costume contest awarding cash prizes in two age brackets, plus a kids’ contest. The cost of entering the costume contest is free with the price of admission ($5, kids 10-under free).

“I think one of the reasonsthe conventionwas successful last year is because a focus was placed on just making it affordable fun,” Tramel said. “The goal of the convention wasn’t to empty everyone’s pockets. The goal was for people to have a good time.If you makefun the priority, everything else sort of falls into place.”

More than 30 vendors and convention guests are set to be featured in the convention’s dealer room.

The “Mystery Machine” of Scooby-Doo fame and a TARDIS like the timetraveling police call box from “Doctor Who” will be on hand for photo ops. Timelord Travel Agency is providing the TARDIS, and donations will be accepted for Make-AWish Oklahoma.
