Speaker hopes to explore most-asked questions about Christian faith
Christian apologist Jeremiah Johnston will lead discussions about some of the questions often asked about Christianity during three special presentations set for Sunday at a south Oklahoma City church.
Johnston, president and founder of the Houstonbased Christian Thinkers Society, will offer the free presentations as part of his organization’s “Unanswered Tour” at Southern Hills Baptist Church, 8601 S Pennsylvania.
Attendees also will have an opportunity to learn more about the Museum of the Bible that recently opened in Washington, D.C. A representative from the museum will be on hand to discuss the new museum and a display featuring information about the multimedia attraction will be featured.
Daniel Snow, Southern Hills’ minister to young adults, said the church decided to bring Johnston and his “Unanswered Tour” because, “We appreciated his writings and the way he approached common questions biblically,” Snow said.
He said Johnston will address such issues as the silence of God, the bodily resurrection of Christ, mental illness and the problems of pain and evil in the world.
He said Johnston, who also teaches at Houston Baptist University, will speak during the church’s two worship services on Sunday morning. Johnston will also lead an evening question-and-answer session.
Snow said he and other church leaders hope the presentations draw the public, particularly anyone who feels they have some unanswered questions about Christian theology.
“We really do want to make this event not just for our church family for the community in general,” Snow said.
“This is an opportunity for Christians to be strengthened in their faith, but it’s also an opportunity for those who are skeptical about the Christian faith.”
He said Southern Hills is hoping Sunday’s event serves as a launching pad for an event either annually or every two years that the church may sponsor focusing on Christian ethics or Christian apologetics.
Meanwhile, he said Michael McAfee, director of Bible engagement for the Museum of the Bible, will be at the church to talk to attendees about the museum. The $500 million museum three blocks from the U.S. Capitol was built by the Green family, founders of Oklahoma City-based arts and crafts retailer Hobby Lobby.
It recently was placed on the “Best New Attraction” list by USA Today.
