Westmoore’s Palmer commits to Sam Houston State Bearkats
Westmoore star tight end
James Palmer’s mission last season was to prove he’s healthy.
He showed that and now he’ll play Division I football.
Palmer committed to Sam Houston State recently, he announced on his Twitter page.
A two-star recruit, the 6-foot-1, 230-pound senior returned in the fall after rupturing his Achilles tendon as a junior. This season, he caught 27 passes for 441 yards and eight touchdowns. He averaged 16.3 yards per reception.
Ranked No. 22 on The Oklahoman’s Super 30 rankings of the state’s top college recruits, Palmer also had offers from Arkansas State and Colorado State.
Liberty boys top Caney Valley in 6OT
Caney Valley and Liberty’s battle for third place in Caney Valley’s boys tournament Saturday went to a new level.
Six overtime periods. Liberty won 83-78, surviving the game that lasted nearly 3 hours in front of a packed gym.
“It was insane,” Liberty coach Colby Wade said.
Liberty (11-5) won the game when senior Kyler
Cloud made a go-ahead basket with less than 20 seconds remaining. He then got a defensive rebound, was fouled and made both free throws.
But this came after Liberty missed two chances in other overtimes to win at the free-throw line. Caney Valley (9-6) also forced the final overtime with a putback at the buzzer, which was the result of Liberty missing a game-sealing layup.
“It’s all a blur,” Caney Valley coach Tug Brinker said. “It was unbelievable. I don’t think anybody will ever see anything like that again.”
Caney Valley star Brandon
Fogle played every quarter with a high ankle sprain and broken hand. The Trojans still ran out of depth with three starters fouling out.
Liberty freshman Jaylen
Wheeler had 28 points, while senior Clue Anderson had 24 and Cloud scored 19.
Liberty had just seven players in its rotation. An eighth was out with the flu. One starter fouled out in the first overtime and Wade never subbed in the final five periods.
“They gutted it out, they played and it came down to we got stops,” Wade said.
