OU opens Skip Johnson era with 6-3 win

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Oklahoma opened its season with a 6-3 win against No. 20-ranked Indiana Friday afternoon in Skip Johnson’s debut as the Sooners’ head coach.

Center fielder Steele Walker powered the Sooners' offense with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. The junior from Prosper, Texas recorded a pair of extra-base hits, including a solo homer and a ground-rule double that scored Cade Harris.

Right fielder Logan Sowers led Indiana with a 3-for-4 effort and a solo home run.

Junior right-hander Jake Irvin earned the win after pitching five innings for the Sooners. He struck out seven and gave up three runs on four hits and two walks.

Junior Austin Hansen worked out of a basesloade­d jam and struck out the side in the sixth. He pitched a perfect seventh before right-hander Connor Berry finished the game by tossing two-scoreless innings to record the save.

OSU beats Texas State in season opener

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — Oklahoma State defeated Texas State 6-1 Friday to open the 2018 season.

Colin Simpson led OSU with a 3-for-4 night that included a two-run homer. Starting pitcher Jonathan Heasley worked six scoreless innings and tied a career high with six strikeouts to earn the win on the mound.

After a pitcher’s duel through the first five innings, the Cowboys broke the scoreless drought in the sixth. Ryan Cash earned a one-out walk and stole second. He scampered home to score on the play after a pair of throwing errors to give OSU a 1-0 lead.

The Cowboys added to their lead two batters later when Simpson hit a homer over the right-center field wall to put the Pokes ahead by three runs.

OSU tallied two more runs in the seventh, taking advantage of a pair of errors by the Bobcats, who had five errors in the game.

The Cowboys’ final run came on an RBI single by Simpson in the eighth.

Heasley was strong in his sophomore debut as the right-hander allowed just four hits and did not allow a runner to reach second base.

Texas State scored its lone runs in the final two frames, getting an unearned run in the eighth and scoring on a pair of hits against Carson Teel in the ninth.
