I-235 closure plans delayed until April

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

An Interstate 235 project to move an old railroad bridge has been delayed until April, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation reports.

I-235 from N 36 to Interstate 44 will be open Friday through Sunday this weekend when the work had been planned.

The I-235 "Off Broadway" project in Oklahoma City needs more time to complete necessary coordination and construction work before removing the old BNSF Railway bridge, the state Transportation Department reported.

The contractor is tentatively rescheduling weekend closure of I-235 for early April to ensure enough time for tasks by both entities. There also may be some additional lanes narrowed leading up to the closure, the state Transportation Department reported.

Even once these closures are complete, I-235 will remain an active work zone between N 36 and I-44 through 2019. Motorists can expect I-235 to remain open with two lanes in each direction during peak commute times, but the corridor remains narrow with little room to maneuver, the Transportation Department reported in a news release.

Some additional lane closures may occur or traffic may shift as needed as lanes are added. Motorists are reminded to use alternate routes such as I-35, I-40, I-44, State Highway 74/ Lake Hefner Parkway and Lincoln Boulevard.
