Concert to focus on songs of the Civil Rights Movement

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Ambassadors Concert Choir will present “The Music of the Civil Rights Movement” at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday at The Douglass Auditorium at Page Woodson, 600 N High Ave.

The concerts will feature a special tribute to the Douglass High School music department. Local rapper Jabee, an Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame inductee, is scheduled to perform with the choir on the song “By Any Means.”

Organizers said the music of the Civil Rights Movement are songs that reflect a time in America’s history that should be remembered and shared with children.

“This will be a concert commemorating the music of the modern Civil Rights Movement, and a tribute to the rich music legacy of Douglass High School, the music faculty and the grads of the school,” Ambassadors’ artistic director Sandra D. Thompson said in a news release.

This will be the first concert in the new Douglass Auditorium at Page Woodson. This newly renovated auditorium is a venue in the original location of Douglass High School.

The choir will take time to honor the music faculty and students of Douglass High School.

The Ambassadors Concert Choir was formed in 1979 by longtime music ministry leader Kenneth Kilgore as an extension of the music ministry of St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Oklahoma City.

Kilgore gathered about 40 local singers and musicians to form a choir that would provide an opportunity to perform all types of sacred music at the highest levels of professionalism and musicality. The choir grew in size, professionalism and repertoire, adding singers and musicians from diverse congregations, faiths, ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Tickets are $10 and may be purchased in advance online at Ticketstorm.com or at the door on the day of the event.
