Police have arrested a teenager who fled U.S. Grant High School on Thursday morning after dropping a backpack with a loaded gun inside, authorities said.

No shots or injuries were reported. The former student, described by police as a 16-year-old boy, ran from the school, 5016 S Penn, after being spotted on campus.

The boy later was taken into custody in another city on two felony robbery warrants, Oklahoma City police Capt. Bo

Mathews said.

“Anytime somebody brings a gun to school there is a threat,” Mathews said. “We don’t know what his thoughts or actions were at that point.”

Mathews said Robinson may have entered the building through a side door that was propped open. There is a metal detector inside the front entrance to the school.

The school was placed on lockdown while police

searched for the boy. The lockdown later was changed to a lockout, which means students were allowed to resume classes but no one was allowed to enter the building.

Parents who wanted to pick up their children had to check in with police at the west entrance to the school.

Oklahoma City Public Schools spokeswoman Beth Harrison said the boy is a former U.S. Grant student who was carrying a backpack with the gun inside when he was stopped by staff members.

“We are very grateful for the quick response of school staff and law enforcement who prevented what could have been a tragic situation,” she said. “As always, the safety and security of our students and staff are our top priority.”

Several other schools in the area also were placed on lockouts as a precaution. The lockouts at Van Buren, Coolidge, Fillmore, Rancho Village, Stand Watie elementary schools and Emerson South High School later were lifted.
