Oklahoma Humanities group debuts podcast

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

Oklahoma Humanities recently debuted its new BrainBox podcast to take listeners on a deep dive into issues affecting American society and culture.

Chris Carroll, BrainBox host and Oklahoma Humanities program officer, and guests will explore how history, literature, ethics, philosophy and other humanities fields inform listeners’ understanding of current events and the human experience.

“The podcast has ambitious goals,” Carroll said. “BrainBox will challenge listeners to consider what we can learn from the choices made by those who came before us, what literature and pop culture are saying about the times we live in, and what experts think is coming in our future.”

During the debut episode, Ben Alpers, of the University of Oklahoma Honors College, spoke with Carroll about why the Watergate scandal of the early 1970s is important to understanding American politics and culture today.

Future podcasts will look at the issues of sexual harassment and the #MeToo movement through the wider lens of women’s history, issues of race and identity in Oklahoma and across the country, and the historical contexts of pop culture touchstones like “Game of Thrones” and more.

Oklahoma Humanities is an independent, nonprofit organization whose mission is to strengthen communities by helping Oklahomans learn about the human experience, understand new perspectives, and participate knowledgeably in civic life through humanities disciplines such as history, literature, film studies, art criticism and philosophy.
