Draper trail construction begins
“Groundbreaking” and “Cornett” have become synonymous in Mick Cornett’s 14 years as mayor. Cornett turned what likely was his last ceremonial shovelful of dirt as mayor last week as the city marked the beginning of construction of the 13-mile Lake Stanley Draper trail. The trail is among projects that will form a key part of Cornett’s legacy. While he gained international attention for putting the city on a diet, his determination to craft a healthier community through the “built environment” will be a lasting testament to his impact and vision.
Of note: MAPS 3 projects contributing to a healthier city include the new downtown park and whitewater rafting center, sidewalks, trails, and health and wellness centers for seniors.
Biking, walking plan under review
Oklahoma City is taking public comments through March 21 on “bikewalkokc,” the city’s first pedestrian and bicycle master plan. The 149-page document envisions a linear park along Grand Boulevard, circling the central city; bicycling and walking routes and bridges separated from traffic; a walkable downtown; and greenways linking residences and neighborhood parks, schools and shops.
Of note: Study the plan and comment at https:// okc.gov/bikewalkokc.
They said it
“We’ve got to get people out of their cars, out of those drive-through windows, get them walking, get them in parks and get them more active.”
— Mayor Mick Cornett, quoted in the executive summary of “bikewalkokc,” the city’s master plan for pedestrians and bicyclists. The document is subtitled “Moving toward a healthy future.”
