- FROM STAFF REPORTS

Oklahoma City nonprofit Fields and Futures will select 50 students to run the Redbud running events with Frezer Legesse, professional Under Armour runner and Olympic trial semifinalist. The students will be sponsored by Fields and Futures allowing them to run the race at no charge.

“At Fields and Futures, we strive to grow student participation in sports by rebuilding athletic fields, providing improved resources and professional development for coaches and creating new opportunities for students to join a team,” Fields & Futures founder and Chairman Tim McLaughlin said. “Partnering with the Redbud Classic is a great way to get the students out in the community and involved in sports and philanthropy during the race weekend.”

The 2018 Redbud Classic features events for the

whole family starting with 10-, 33- and 45-Mile Bike Tours and a 1-Mile Kids’ Fun Run on April 7. The events continue on April 8 with 5K and 10K timed runs, 5K Wheelchair Event and 2-Mile Walk and Baby Stroller Derby featuring a new scavenger hunt throughout the course.

“The Redbud Classic involves the community through fun, fitness and philanthropy making this a valuable event for the students,” Redbud Classic Race Director Patty Anthony said. “Not only will the students have the opportunity to race alongside a professional runner, but also give back to the community by supporting our 2018 beneficiary, Whiz Kids Oklahoma.”

The Redbud events continue past the finish line with the fourth annual Redbud Bash. The Bash will be at 1 p.m. April 8 in the finish area of Nichols Hills Plaza. There will be a variety of food from some of Oklahoma’s premier food trucks, beverages from COOP Ale Works and other sponsors, free family-friendly games and activities, as well as live entertainment.

Registration is available online, in person or by mail. By registering early online at redbud.org, participants are more likely to receive their choice of T-shirt size, as well as a timing tag. Until April 2, early bird registration fees are $30 for the run/ walk events and $40 for the cycling tours, or $65 for both events.
