OSU ends weekend with tie

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

For the first time since 1985, Oklahoma State ended a baseball game without a winner.

After attempting to outlast a lightning delay, the Cowboys tied Seton Hall 3-3 Sunday afternoon at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium in Stillwater as the game was called with one out and two OSU runners in scoring position in the bottom of the eighth inning due to weather and SHU’s travel curfew.

Despite being outhit by a 9-3 margin, OSU's Colin Simpson had a great day at the plate. The former Edmond Memorial standout went 2-for-3, scored two runs and blasted his fifth home run of the season.

OSU (9-8-1) also got a quality start out of sophomore right-hander C.J. Varela, who worked five innings and allowed two runs on six hits before handing the ball to Joe Lienhard, who allowed one run and struck out four in three innings of relief.

As OSU's Michael Neustifter approached the plate in the eighth with one out and two runners in scoring position, the lightning sirens sounded. The game was delayed for 36 minutes and was set to resume before the sirens went off again, causing the game to be halted and officially end in a tie.

The game marks the first to ever end in a tie at Reynolds Stadium in its 37-year history. OSU’s last tie game came in 1985 against Western Michigan in Lakeland, Florida. The contest was stopped due to darkness.

OU falls to Kennesaw State

Oklahoma fell to Kennesaw State 9-3 in its series finale on Sunday afternoon in Norman.

The Sooners, who clinched the three-game series on Saturday, dropped to 14-8, while the Owls improved to 9-12.

The Owls scored six of their runs on home runs beginning with a leadoff blast in the second by catcher Griffin Helms. Left fielder LaDonis Bryant added a two-run homer in the second and third baseman Tyler Simon blasted a threerun shot in the fourth after a two-out error extended the inning.

Shortstop Brandon Zaragoza led the OU offense, going 3-for-5 with one RBI.

The Sooners put a single run on the board in the sixth through ninth innings, but the nine-run deficit was too much for OU to overcome.

Freshman right-hander Cade Cavalli went 3.2 innings in his second career start for the Sooners. Cavalli (2-1) gave up six runs, five earned, on five hits and two walks.
