Mustang announces Hall of Fame class

A former NFL star and former Olympic gold medalist headline Mustang Public Schools inaugural Athletics Hall of Fame class.

Former New York

Jet Dennis Byrd and former Olympic wrestler Kendall Cross were selected along with eight others by the Mustang Athletics Hall of Fame selection committee. They will be honored during a banquet Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Mustang High School Events Center.

Byrd, who died in a car crash in 2016, played football at Tulsa and for the New York Jets. He became an inspiratio­nal story following an injury that doctors worried would never let him walk again. He never fully recovered but did walk with some difficulty following extensive rehab. Mustang gives an improved football player each year with an award in Byrd’s name.

Cross was a three-time All-American wrestler at Oklahoma State. He also won gold in the 1996 Olympics and was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2002.

Former girls basketball star Lori (Cloar) Carter, former Cincinnati Red Darron Cox, former basketball star Tom Duckett, former volleyball coach

Dr. Linda Lacy, longtime basketball coach Bob Pigg, profession­al softball player Travis Raper, longtime athletic director Steve Smiley and the school’s only three-sport All-State selection Misty VanCuren.
