University of Central Oklahoma senior Kalen Russell, a strategic communications major from Muskogee recently earned recognition as one of Campus Compact’s 2018 Newman Civic Fellows.
Campus Compact, a Boston-based nonprofit organization, working to advance the public purposes of higher education, announced 268 students, including Russell, who comprise the organization’s 2018 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows.
Russell’s accolades stretch beyond her recent recognition from Campus Compact. She won the 2017 Martin Luther King Enterprise Oratory Competition for her speech about the importance of harmony in diversity and also spoke to legislators at the Oklahoma Capitol during the 2018 “Higher Ed Day.”
Also, Russell was one of 10 students who developed the uSpeak Project, which placed first in the national EdVenture Partners Peer to Peer: Challenging Extremism competition, aimed to educate students on campus about the importance of freedom of speech and expression.
The Newman Civic Fellowship, supported by the KPMG Foundation and Newman’s Own Foundation and named for Campus Compact co-founder Frank Newman, is a one-year experience, emphasizing personal, professional and civic growth.
Through the fellowship, students gain a variety of learning, scholarship, postgraduate and networking opportunities, including attendance at a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows, in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the U.S. Senate.
