Edmond plans Arbor Week events

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

Edmond’s Arbor Week Celebration takes place the last full week in March, with two events planned for promoting the planting of trees in Edmond.

Beginning at 4 p.m. March 29, volunteers will plant 29 trees at the Swan Lake Detention Area at N Kelly Avenue and Swan Lake Road.

Volunteers also will plant trees in Carl Reherman Park at Arcadia Lake, beginning at 10 a.m. March 31. Thirty-one trees will be planted at the new park, 6280 E 33rd St. If available, participants are encouraged to bring their own tools to volunteer events.

This year's Edmond Arbor Day Art Contest for fifth-graders was themed “Trees in Our Town.” Artwork from each of the 19 participating public and private schools will be showcased through April 28 in the “Arbor Day Art Show” at the Edmond Historical Museum, 431 S Boulevard. The Edmond Visual Arts Commission will select the overall first-, second- and thirdplace “Best of Show” from the school winners to be recognized March 26 at the Edmond City Council meeting.

The Urban Forestry Department encourages residents to celebrate Oklahoma Arbor Week by planting trees at their homes for energy savings, beautification, erosion prevention and wildlife habitat.
