A Midwest City man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for fatally shooting his wife.

Robert Lee Moon, 50, pleaded guilty Friday in Oklahoma County District Court to seconddegree murder.

Moon said he shot his wife April 22 after “she shot at me first,” the plea paperwork shows.

Early that morning, Moon called 911 and said he needed an ambulance because he shot his wife. Officers and medics responded to the couple’s house in northeast Midwest City and found the victim, Denise Moon, 51, shot in the chest, police reported. She died at a hospital.

Robert Moon told officers he and his wife had been arguing and drinking whiskey before the shooting. He said he shoved his wife to the floor and pinned her arms above her head, a police detective reported in a court affidavit.

When Denise Moon got up, she grabbed her purse, which contained her revolver, and left the house, according to the affidavit. Robert Moon then grabbed his 9 mm handgun and followed his wife outside to her van, police reported.

As he approached the driver’s side window, Denise Moon fired a shot at him from inside the vehicle, police reported. Robert Moon said he then fired his gun through the window.

Robert Moon said that following his wife out of the house with his gun was “stupid and it escalated the situation,” police reported.

According to a plea agreement, Moon will serve 10 years probation following his release from prison. He also must attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and receive mental health counseling.
