OKC candy store will close next month

42nd Street Candy Co. is closing shop.

Owner Teresa Wall announced Wednesday via email newsletter her intention to close the store at 4200 N Western at the end of business April 30.

“It is now time for us to face the cold hard fact that we can no longer keep our doors open,” Wall wrote. “Two years of construction on Western Avenue coupled with the decline in the local economy have simply made it an impossibility. I have struggled with this decision for quite some time and, unfortunately, there’s noway around it.”

Wall told The Oklahoman Wednesday the business would retain a presence in the community, even without its traditional store location.

“We will try to participate in pop-up shops in the future, but we just can’t do brick and mortar,” Wall said. The store will also continue its online gift basket and candy buffet services.

Wall has owned the business for the past 18 years, but the store has been in Oklahoma City for the past 39 years.

“It’s been a wonderful, wonderful experience and I’m very grateful to have had it for 18 years,” Wall said. “I would just like to say thank you to everyone who has been a part of this store for the past 39 years. It’s some of the best memories I’ve had in my life.”

The store has always been in the same building, however it moved to a larger space within that building nearly 11 years ago. During the store’s final days, Wall said everything, including furniture and fixtures, is for sale.

Everything storewide is 30 percent off, increasing every week after that, Wall said.

Closing of one business will allow Wall to dedicate more time to another venture she coowns with her sister-inlaw. It will provide more of the creative outlet and work in sales she loved as part of her ownership of 42nd Street Candy Co.

“I am co-owner of a candle business I started three years ago called Gypsy Wicks,” Wall said. “I’m sure I’ll be spending a lot more time with that business than I’m able to now.”
