• What a fifth day of school closures means

Oklahoma City Public Schools students will have to wait an extra day before staring their summer vacation.

District officials announced Thursday that schools will be closed Friday for a fifth consecutive day so teachers can participate in the statewide walkout. That means the last day of the year for students will be May 30 instead of May 29.

The district already has exhausted four of six extra days built into the 201718 calendar, and will have to use a fifth day on May 30 to make up for missed instructional time, officials said. It is unclear whether the district will be closed Monday, which would push the last day of school for students back to May 31, spokeswoman Beth Harrison said.

“If we go past Monday, if we go into Day 7, we start adding minutes to the end of the day,” Harrison said. “There are broader implications going forward for any more days canceled because it starts to impact instructional time, which starts to impact families.”

While the district can add time to the end of the day to account for days seven through nine of a walkout, it would take a calendar adjustment approved by the school board to make up any additional days missed.

Other districts may have to add days to the end of the school year if the walkout persists. The Edmond, Moore and Norman districts will survey teachers Friday before deciding whether to close schools Monday.

Norman Public Schools is out of extra days and will have to make up time for closing Friday and beyond.

“My intention, to the extent possible, is to add time to existing school days rather than add days to the end of the year,” Superintendent Nick Migliorino told families Thursday. “The duration of the walkout will determine how much time will need to be made up and if it becomes necessary to add days to the school year.”

Moore Public Schools Superintendent Robert Romines said his district, too, is nearly out of extra days and close to having to make up time.

Edmond Public Schools, meanwhile, has eight inclement weather days built into its calendar but used two days earlier in the year. Since the district has used four of its six remaining days and is closed again Friday, teachers can stay out through Monday without having to make up the time, spokeswoman Susan Parks Schlepp said Thursday.

If schools are closed on Tuesday and Wednesday the makeup days would be May 24-25, she said.
