Broadcaster’s memorial held at Rose Bowl

Keith Jackson was remembered as “the Walter Cronkite of sports broadcasting” and a loving husband, father and grandfather away from the broadcast booth in a memorial service at the Rose Bowl.

Nearly 400 family and friends gathered Sunday on the field at the historic stadium where Jackson, the folksy voice of college football for decades on ABC, called a record 15 New Year’s Day games — the last in 2006.

A smattering of the public looked on from seats in the south end zone. The stadium’s radio and TV booths are named in his honor.

Pass rusher returns to Cowboys

Defensive end David Irving is returning to the Dallas Cowboys after signing a $2.9 million, one-year offer as a restricted free agent.

The Cowboys could have matched any offer for Irving after giving him a second-round tender. Irving reported for the start of offseason workouts Monday and signed the contract.

Irving was suspended the first four games last season for violating the NFL’s ban on performance enhancers and missed the last four with a concussion. In between, he had seven sacks in eight games, second on the team behind Pro Bowl selection DeMarcus Lawrence.

Game postponed because of falling ice

The Toronto Blue Jays postponed their series opener Monday against Kansas City because of chunks of ice crashing down from the nearby CN Tower following a weekend of freezing rain.
