The Oklahoman

Timely hitting

Outfielder Alex Verdugo has been Mr. Clutch for the Dodgers. Before Monday night, all seven of his RBI either tied or won games, including his three-run walkoff homer on Sunday.

Oklahoma City’s opening homestand was not short of drama.

Plenty of offense and strong pitching. Oh, and four walk-off victories, the latest coming late Monday night with outfielder Henry Ramos’ two-run single in the 10th for an 8-7 victory over New Orleans at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

The Dodgers ended the homestand 7-0 and are 9-1 overall. It’s their best start at the Brick since it opened in 1998. Ramos came to bat with the bases loaded and no outs. He had already hit two grand slams in in the previous six home games. This time, he pushed a hardhit grounder to right field to score two runs. New Orleans had battled to tie the game with two runs in the eighth and took a lead in the top of the 10th when Jonathan Rodriguez, who was placed on second to open the inning, scored on a groundout by former Dodger Scott Van Slyke.

Top prospect Walker Buehler delivered four strong innings to start the game. Buehler, 23, hit his limit of 80 pitches in four innings. He allowed just two runs — one earned — on three hits and two walks. He also struck out five.

OKC outfielder Alex Verdugo homered to open the bottom half of the inning, his third in three games. OKC committed five errors, allowing two unearned runs.

Ramos remains hot

Ramos enjoyed facing New Orleans pitching.

Ramos, who turned 26 Sunday, was 12 for 19 with five extra-base hits, including two grand slams, and 13 RBI in the four games against the Baby Cakes. Monday, he had three hits, including a double, and four RBI.

“He can hit,” OKC manager Bill Haselman said. “As long as he can stay healthy. Being healthy was one of his things. He’s been doing that.”
