Cowboys, Sooners both ranked in top 20 heading into Bedlam

Both Oklahoma State and Oklahoma are ranked in the top 20 in this week's Collegiate Baseball poll.

After a sweep of Kansas, the Cowboys are No. 17 in the poll. Oklahoma, which lost two of three at Texas Tech over the weekend, is ranked No. 18.

With a 12-3 league record, the Cowboys lead the Big 12 conference. The two clubs meet in the Bedlam series this weekend.

Friday's game will be at 7 p.m. at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium in Stillwater, while Saturday and Sunday's game will be at Tulsa's ONEOK Field. First pitch Saturday is 7 p.m., and Sunday's game is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Sooners, Cowgirl selected in draft

Oklahoma pitcher Paige Lowary was the first selection Monday night in the National Pro Fastpitch League Draft.

Lowary was selected by the Chicago Bandits, and OU ace Paige Parker was selected by the USSSA Florida Pride with the sixth overall pick.

If she elects to play, Parker, a lefty with a 0.85 ERA, would reunite with exSooner, Lauren Chamberlai­n, also a former No. 1 pick.

Oklahoma State All-American Vanessa Shippy was selected by the Cleveland Comets with the 11th pick. OU's Nicole Pendley was also taken by the Pride, selected with the No. 12 pick.

OSU's Funk named Newcomer of the Week

Oklahoma State first baseman Christian Funk was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Monday.

Funk hit .357 with two home runs, a double and eight RBI on the week, doing most of his damage Friday against Kansas.

In OSU's 12-1 victory to open the series, Funk, a junior from Fresno, California, hit two homers, including a grand slam, and drove in seven runs, the most RBI by a Cowboy since 2009.

Funk added another RBI in the day's second game and scored the winning run in the Cowboys' 4-3 victory.

OCU Student wins weightlift­ing medal

Oklahoma City University English major Nick Shironaka placed first at the 2018 USA Weightlift­ing University National Championsh­ip in Ogden, Utah, on Sunday.

Shironaka took home a gold medal for the snatch at 145 kg. He posted a total of 315 kg with a clean and jerk of 170 kg.

His total qualified him for the USA Senior Nationals in May in Kansas City.
