OBSERVATIONS AND FUN FACTS ABOUT LAURYN AND LUKE’S WEDDING

- CARLA HINTON Staff Writer chinton@oklahoman.com

Flavor of love. Want the scoop on Blue Bell Ice Cream’s “Grooms Cake” and “Brides Cake” after reading about Luke Balke’s marriage proposal to Lauryn Schack?

According to the Texas-based creamery, “Bride’s Cake,” an almond ice cream with white cake pieces surrounded by a rich amaretto-flavored cream cheese icing swirl, was introduced in May 2017. “Groom’s Cake” is a chocolate ice cream with chocolate cake pieces and chocolate-coated strawberry hearts, surrounded by swirls of strawberry sauce and chocolate icing. “We have heard from fans who serve Blue Bell Ice Cream at their weddings in place of the traditional cake. Now you can have both,” Jenny Van Dorf, Blue Bell public relations manager, said in a news release.

With the new flavor, Blue Bell brought back Groom’s Cake. “We introduced Groom’s Cake in 2009. The idea came from an actual groom’s cake one of our employees tasted at a family wedding,” Van Dorf said. “Quite the match, I would say!”

Van Dorf said Bride’s Cake proved extremely popular, and it sold out in just a few short weeks after its introduction. She said the company received many requests for its return, mostly from the company’s fans in Louisiana. Blue Bell produced more but released its inventory in Louisiana only. This may account for Balke’s being able to find only a pint of Bride’s Cake to present during his proposal to Schack. Van Dorf said the company’s hope is to produce it again in 2018 to release to all its markets.

Reader’s delight. Lauryn Schack said she’s a big reader, and the public library has always been one of her favorite places to visit. “I love reading. Before we met, I spent a lot of time at the library in college. Not as much anymore, but I do love the library,” she said. After visiting several possible venues for her wedding, she said she came away impressed with the Tulsa City County Central Library, which underwent an extensive $55 million renovation that was unveiled in 2016. Schack said library representatives were enthusiastic about what the venue had to offer and that enthusiasm was contagious.

Pretty in pink ... and blue.

Schack said she chose light blue and pink for her wedding colors because she thought it would be relatively easy for her bridesmaids to find a dress in light blue, and she likes pink flowers.

Love for all things Anthropologie. Schack chose her wedding dress from Anthropologie’s BHLDN (pronounced beholden) wedding line (https://www.bhldn.com). “I’m obsessed with Anthropologie so it felt appropriate, and I loved the simplicity of it,” Schack said of her gown.

Keeping it simple. Schack and Balke said they didn’t want their wedding to be traditional for tradition’s sake. Rather, they liked the idea of bringing family and friends together for a simple, fun celebration. “My idea for our wedding was just to have a fun sort of party for our friends and family where we just happened to be getting married. I wanted little stress for us, little stress for our families. I didn’t want to do anything just because it was tradition,” Schack said. She said the couple didn’t have a flower girl or ring bearer nor did they make the traditional “grand exit.” She summed it up this way: “A library, good food and good drinks.”
