‘Mastering something’
Plans for the garden started about two years ago when members of the Cleveland County disABILITY Coalition discussed projects that could benefit people with special needs in the community. The coalition works to enhance the quality of life for persons with disabilities by increasing awareness of disabilities and identifying and developing solutions for community
needs.
“We’re always trying to find and create ways so they can interact more in the community.”
Participants from Able are some of those who will be involved in the community garden, and Lance Davis, executive director at Able, is excited about the knowledge they will gain from the experience.
“It will really help these guys with mastering something,” Davis said. “They get to see and get to eat and get to work with and get to understand about nature and flowers, plants, herbs and vegetables.”
Able participants also can use some of the vegetables and herbs they grow in a cooking program that the organization is starting, he said.
Davis said he looks forward to the potential of the garden and the social interaction it can bring between people with disabilities, residents, and community and youth organizations.
“We really want it to be a success,” he said.
Fox said she’s also excited about the individuals and groups who will benefit from the garden. She and her family also are participating in the project.
Fox, her husband and daughter will use one of the tall garden beds to plant herbs and flowers. The bed offers access for her daughter, who uses a wheelchair after an auto accident left her partially paralyzed.
Fox said her daughter, Jennifer, has been an inspiration for projects, like the garden, that will provide resources and opportunities for people with disabilities.
“She’s been a great part of the drive to serve and help people with special needs.”
Fox also hopes the garden creates enjoyment and satisfaction for those involved.
“We’re hoping that it will be a good, fun, learning and positive experience for people.”
