Bogaerts returns to Red Sox from DL

Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts returned to the starting lineup after missing 15 games with a broken talus bone in his left ankle.

Bogaerts was activated from the 10-day disabled list Friday. He started at shortstop and batted fifth against Tampa Bay.

Infielder/outfielder Brock Holt was put on the disabled list because of a strained left hamstring.

Bogarts was hurt April 8 while sliding into the Rays dugout to grab an errant ball.

A 2016 AL All-Star, Bogaerts played in Boston's first nine games before getting hurt. He was batting .368 with nine RBIs at the time of his injury.

Sharks’ Kane suspended for cross-check

San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane has been suspended for Game 2 Saturday against Vegas because of a cross-check to the head of Pierre-Edouard Bellemare.

The NHL announced the ban Friday. The league said Kane’s second cross-check after the whistle was “not a hockey play” and served no purpose other than hitting an opponent in the head.

The play came in the third period of a series opener that San Jose lost 7-0 to the Golden Knights.

QB Patterson eligible to play for Michigan

Quarterbac­k Shea Patterson is eligible to play for Michigan this year after the NCAA granted the Mississipp­i transfer's request to waive the usually required redshirt season at his new school.

Michigan and Ole Miss released a joint statement Friday to announce the decision, which could set the stage for six of Patterson's former Ole Miss teammates to be cleared to play next season, too.

Patterson, who is heading into his junior season and coming off a knee injury, transferre­d from Ole Miss after the Rebels were sanctioned by the NCAA last year. .
