Mustang opened its playoff matchup with rival Yukon with two things going the Broncos way.

The wind and a thirst for revenge. After dropping a match to Yukon earlier in the season, Mustang coach Lindsay Riggs said her girls were fired up at the chance to face its nearby rival again in the first round of the Class 6A soccer playoffs.

“We were embarrassed because our senior class had never lost to Yukon,” Riggs said. “Tonight, the energy was in our favor.”

Mustang jumped to a quick three-goal lead while playing with a northerly strong wind. The Broncos would go on to beat Yukon 3-1 while dominating time of possession. Sophomore forward Addie Arthur opened the scoring for Mustang when she knocked in a header off a pass from junior Sammy See.

Less than two minutes later, senior forward Sarah Bryant led the action down the field for Mustang, playing a two-man attack with freshman forward Kyla Lovelace, which resulted in Bryant knocking home a quick strike past Yukon’s keeper.

“I was really nervous before the game,” Arthur said. “Losing to Yukon the first time meant we had to do it because there was no other option.”

With a little more than 22 minutes to go before half, Mustang set up for a corner kick. Senior midfielder Madison Oliver positioned herself about 10 yards out and was able to head it home to give Mustang the 3-0 advantage.

“We were amped up and ready to go,” Oliver said. “I saw it coming up and I barely nicked it, but it was enough.”

Yukon opened the half with Myka Heimbach scoring a goal 20 seconds in. The wind in Yukon’s favor the second half meant more scoring chances, but Mustang managed to slow the game down, possessing the ball nearly 60 percent of the time to get the win and advance in the playoffs. Mustang will face Deer Creek in the second round.

“When things don’t go our way we tend get stronger and tend to build off each other,” Riggs said. “We regrouped ourselves and our coming away with a good win.”

Norman girls take down Bixby

After a scoreless first half, Norman got things rolling in the second.

Norman's Megan Jones scored a goal in the first 30 seconds of the second half to get things rolling, eventually leading a 3-0 Tigers win.

Less than 10 minutes later, Tori Kitchell scored to make it 2-0 before a corner kick to Alayna Mendoza scored again with 17 minutes left in the match.

Norman will face Jenks on Friday in the Class 6A quarterfinals.

Edmond North’s Covarrubias scores hat trick

Abe Covarrubias only needed a half.

The forward knocked home three first-half goals against Moore in the first round of the Class 6A boys playoffs, helping Edmond North secure a 4-0 win.

Covarrubias opened up scoring with a strike at the 14 minute mark when he got a shot past Moore keeper Elias Perez.

Two minutes later, he was back at it, hitting the back of the net on a penalty kick.

With less than 10 minutes to go before halftime, Covarrubias went up and over Moore's keeper for his third goal of the half.

Covarrubias added another goal in the second half, helping Edmond North secure the win.

The Huskies will play the winner of Mustang vs. Deer Creek match on Friday.
