MOORE — Rail Fest is coming to the city May 12. The Station at Central Park, 700 S Broadway, will be the venue for this railroad-themed celebration.

“The railroad is an important part of our history in Moore,” Assistant City Manager Todd Jenson said. “In fact, we are named after a Santa Fe railroad employee, Al Moore. It brought many of our first settlers and was vital to our growth and economy for much of our history. It is important that we recognize and honor that history.”

Moore originally was named Verbeck. The town began after the 1889 Land Run and was along the northsouth trackage of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway.

The Santa Fe became part of BNSF Railway in 1996.

A $5 admission fee will get people into Rail Fest’s train show and modeling clinic.

There will be no charge for children younger than 8.

The model train show will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and include about 20 railroad-themed vendors, Jenson said.

Railroad clubs participating will include the Oklahoma Model Railroad Association, Central Oklahoma Garden Railroad Society, OK-N Rail, Oklahoma Free-Mo Club and the Oklahoma Railroad Museum.

The railroad modeling clinics will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sessions will include: “Introduction to Model Railroading,” “Introduction to T-Trak,” “Operating on the HO scale St. Louis Oklahoma and Western Railroad” and “DCC: What It Is and How It Works.”

Free events outside The Station will include barrel train rides from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., the playground during the entire event, and the farmers market from 8 a.m. to noon.

A viewing area will be set up so people can watch trains on the BNSF mainline.

A free music festival featuring Replay will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at the multipurpose pavilion.

Food trucks will be at the festival from 6 to 9 p.m. Scheduled trucks are The Flying Pig BBQ, Wicked Hangry, Let’s Do Greek, The Healthy Hippo and City Ice-n-Moore.

Tickets to the train show may be purchased at The Station.
